Chapter 2

"Jaejoong, here, hold these," Gwai-sook said, as he handed the young man a few binders.  "Rookies need to read up on the information before they can go out on operations with us.  It looks like a lot, but it goes by quickly, I promise.  Just...by the end of the week, make sure you know all the information about the leaders of SJ, and you can be a part of outdoor operations starting next week."

"Yes sir!!  I mean, alright, Gwai-sook.  Sorry, I'm still getting used to not being in uniform," Jaejoong replied bashfully.  He smiled, resisted the urge to salute the older officer, and made his way back to his desk.  Fun week ahead, Jaejoong-ah.  But like he said, I need to do this before I can get into the action, so bear with it.

He laid the binders out on his desk, noticing that each binder was marked with a different SJ member.  He grabbed at the first one instinctively, unable to hide his bias against that particular member: Yesung.

Jaejoong flipped to the first page, seeing that the first record dated back only 3 years ago.  Does that mean he's a new member?  Then how did he move up the ranks so quickly?  Similar questions flashed through his mind continuously as he read up on the cases that Yesung has been involved with.

The initial cases were not very serious crimes, mostly made up of running a valet parking service near Megabox, which was controlled by Hankyung at the time.  They had some fights with other triad organizations so they have been arrested before, but no charges could be made because neither party admitted to serious fighting in the end.  After a year or so, Hankyung moved onto take control of the billards place, leaving Megabox in Yesung's hands.  Up until now, Yesung had never had any direct involvement in these cases, so he technically did not have any kind of criminal record.

Jaejoong asked Gwai-sook, "How come these records only go back three years for Yesung?  Where was he before?"

"Ahh, the CIB, Criminal Investigation Bureau, is currently working on that.  For some reason, we have no records of him before then.  You know Tablo, who was here during the meeting yesterday?  He's actually in CIB, but he transferred over momentarily to help out with SJ's case," Gwai-sook answered, flipping through binders of his own as well.

"Can't we just check his ID number?  So that we can at least confirm his identity."

"He actually doesn't hold a Hong Kong ID card.  He's a citizen of Korea, and thus holds a Korean passport.  I'm assuming that he has a "job" with SJ, allowing him to stay in Hong Kong's borders, and once he's been here for 7 years, he'll apply for an ID card.  But, of course, hopefully before then, we'll be able to arrest and charge him."

"Oh, I see now.  Thanks, Gwai-sook," Jaejoong said, smiling at the elder's kind explanation.

"No problem; it's my job to help out new ones.  Anyway, Jaejoong, it's almost 3 already, and you haven't eaten your lunch yet.  Do you want to eat together down at the canteen?"

"No, it's alright, I brought my own food.  And besides, I want to finish reading this file before I eat."

Gwai-sook looked hesistant, but at Jaejoongs insistence, he went down to the canteen hall first.  Now alone in the police office, Jaejoong stretched his arms out comfortably, glad that he could relax for a bit.  Although he was excited about joining the team, he was still nervous around his new colleagues.  Usually when Yunho was there, he would feel more comfortable, but with Yunho out with the others on an operation, only Gwai-sook and he remained behind.

Refreshed from the stretches, Jaejoong resumed.  It did not take him long before he finished Yesung's file.  He sighed; sure, he now knew all the background information available about this individual, but it did not bring him any closer to personally arresting him and forcing him to pay for his crimes.  He thought back to the incident two years ago:

"Don't come any closer!  I swear, one step closer and I'll jump!"

"Alright!  I'll just stand right here, ok?  Uncle, death isn't the answer to this.  It's just money!  We can pay it off somehow!  Ask family and friends, or if they're not willing, I'll borrow money from the bank!  Just whatever you do, don't jump!!"

"No one will lend any money to me!  No one will believe me anymore!  And I caused all of this...I don't want to be a burden on you anymore, Jaejoong-ah!"

"No!  You're not a burden on anyone!  Just think, if you jump, what will happen to Ah Sum?  She doesn't have any other family except for you!  How do you expect her to take care of herself?  She's just in high school!"

"Jaejoong, don't you get it?  It's
because she's in high school, which is why I don't want her to be burdened by me and my loans!  You know those loan sharks...they'll mess with her if I don't do something!"

"Exactly!  That's why all you need to do is to ask around and borrow some money from reliable sources, and all of this will be over!  You don't need to die, Uncle!!"

Jaejoong was panting, waiting for him to answer.  Moments passed silently, as he was contemplating whether to come back over to safety.

Jaejoong reached his hand out slowly and said, "It's ok, Uncle.  It'll be alright.  Just give me your hand and we'll get you back to safety.  You won't have to worry about these problems again."

He trembled as he made his way to Jaejoong's outstretched hand.  But, just as he was about to grab on, he stepped on a loose cable, losing his footing.

Jaejoong scrunched his eyes; although much time has passed since that incident, he still felt guilty for not being able to catch Ah Sum's father.  Ah Sum had been, and still is, like a sister to him.  Even though they had been close before the incident, they were even closer now.  Since neither of them had relatives living in Hong Kong after the incident, Jaejoong offered his place to her.  She was in her first year of college now, and she brings back straight-A report cards to thank Jaejoong for his kindness over the years.

He closed the file and pushed it aside, not wanting to dwell on such unhappy memories any longer.  He took out a small lunchbox, filled with rice and side dishes, that he had brought from home.  He finished it quickly, and continued to read the files about other members.  Gwai-sook came back awhile later, informing Jaejoong that he would be leaving soon to conduct some business.

"Ok, Gwai-sook, I'll be fine here.  I'll just keep reading up on the information," Jaejoong replied.

Time passed slowly as he plowed through the files.  Case after case, SJ seemed to be involved in many different forms of crimes, but the main objective of their operation was still to crack down on the drug industry.

The cases kept swirling in his mind as he gradually drifted off to sleep.

"Hyung!  Where are you going?" Jaejoong shouted, trying to keep up with his friend.

"I'm sorry, Jaejoong-ah, but I have to leave.  You'll be a good boy, right?  Good boys don't cry, you hear me?"

"B-but...why are you leaving, hyung??  Don't leave me here alone!"

He stopped and turned around to grab Jaejoong's shoulders.  "Jaejoong, I need to go off to school.  Listen to your parents, ok?  There's nothing here in Busan.  They want the best for you, so they want you to get a better education elsewhere."

"I knowwww, but I'd rather stay here with you, hyung!  You're my real family, not them!"

"Don't say that, Jaejoong-ah!  Sure, they may not be your real parents, but they still love you.  I...I love you too.  You're always my special dongsaeng.  And that's exactly why I want you to have the best.  Now listen to me.  Go back inside and finish packing your bags.  You need to leave by lunchtime to make the train."  He steered Jaejoong back to the doorstep of his house.

"Hyung..." Jaejoong sobbed, not willing to let go.

"It's alright.  I'll write letters to you when you arrive in Hong Kong.  I heard that there's a lot of yummy food down there, don't you want to try it?  Make sure you tell me all about it, ok?"

Jaejoong sniffed a couple more times.  "Yes, hyung, I will.  Don't forget me, ok?  I'll come back whenever I can!  You'll always be my hyung!"

The elder boy sighed, and pulled Jaejoong in for a tight hug, hiding his own tears in Jaejoong's jacket.  "Yes, Jaejoong-ah.  I'll always be your hyung."

"Jaejoong-ah!  You ok?  Are you sick or something?" Tablo asked urgently, feeling Jaejoong's forehead worriedly.

"Huh?  Tablo-goh?  Yea, I'm ok, why're you asking?" Jaejoong said groggily, not exactly awake yet from his vivid dream.

"You've been out of it for a bit now; Eunhyuk and I just came back, and we saw that you were sleeping here.  Are you sure you're ok?  You kept saying 'hyung' over and over."

"Yea, I'm fine, I'm sure.  I'm so sorry; I shouldn't have fallen asleep like this.  Ahh, this isn't exactly a very good first impression."  Jaejoong mentally berated himself for falling asleep on the job.  This was not a usual occurrence; it had been a long time since he had dreamed of his past.

"It's alright, at least Kangin-sir isn't here.  Well, it's pretty late already, so why don't you call it a day and go home?  Eunhyuk and I can clean things up."

"O no, how can I ask you do that?  I'll put the files away, so please, just go on with what you were doing."  Jaejoong hurriedly closed all the files and put them back into the storage area, making up for his mistake.

He did so mechanically, however; his dream brought back painful memories.  He had only been 9 years old when he had left his hometown of Busan and came to Hong Kong to live with his parents.  Ahh, he mentally checked himself, not technically my parents.  He had been adopted when he was 6, and had lived in Busan until his new parents decided that he would have better schooling in an international city.  Jaejoong did not have many friends, but his one true friend, or hyung, as I call him, was the only person he felt he could not leave behind.  Once he had arrived in Hong Kong, he immediately wrote back to his hyung.  They kept in contact all throughout high school, but for some mysterious reason, the letters had stopped coming once he graduated.  Ever since then, he had not heard about his hyung, and the memories they had created together stayed locked up tightly in the back of his mind.

By then, he had finished tidying up his space.  He looked over to the other corner of the room, where Eunhyuk seemed to be having trouble with something on the computer.  Tablo leaned in close, eyes focuses on the screen, patiently teaching the younger man, and Eunhyuk was completely concentrated as well, eyes shining as he began to understand Tablo's teachings.  Jaejoong thought sadly, If hyung were here, he'd do the same for me.

"Thanks, guys.  I'm going to leave now then."  Tablo waved his hand, still absorbed with teaching Eunhyuk.

He made his way through the police station, nodding to his colleagues as he passed by them.  He thought, This is where I belong.  Only here is the brotherhood real and strong.  Those kids who join gangs and triads...if all they're looking for is brotherhood, why don't they do something more useful with their lives?  Unfortunately, no one could answer that for him, and he made his way back home.

He boarded the light bus headed for Causeway Bay, flipping open his cell phone to call home.  After a few rings, a sleepy voice answered, "Hello?"

"O, Ah Sum, did I wake you up?  I'm so sorry."

"Nah, it's ok.  Are you coming home soon?"

"Yea.  I was going to ask you if you wanted me to bring home some tong sui (糖水).  But since you're sleeping, forget it.  Go back to sleep; you still have school tomorrow.  I'll open the door myself, so don't worry."

"Ok.  See you tomorrow morning then, Jaejoong-goh."

"Good night."

Jaejoong hung up, glad to hear her voice after the dream he had had.  He shifted in his seat a little, making himself more comfortable, and drifted off to sleep once again, tired from the day's work.

- Yep, more backstory this chapter.  Now you know why Jaejoong doesn't like Yesung ^^  But don't worry, next chapter should be more intense (for those of you who enjoy the action) :)
- Valet parking seems like a weird business, but because there is pretty much no room in Hong Kong, every space becomes valuable.  Especially parking outside clubs and such, they are usually run by local gangsters, which is why going to clubs is pretty shady >_<
- The CIB is a real branch of the HK police force.  And...my information about them comes from another TVB drama lol ^^  All I remember is that they basically gather intelligence using high-tech computer stuff.  Haha, very specific, I know ;P
- If you are a citizen of another country, pretty much the only way to get an HK ID card without losing your nationality is to live in Hong Kong for 7 years straight.  I know this because...I wanted to get an ID card when I went to HK a couple weeks ago, so I was filling out the forms and everything, and I realized that I couldn't without losing my original passport because I can't live in HK for the next 7 years.  Also, I'm pretty sure that either the Chinese government or Hong Kong government will not let you hold two countries' nationalities, so you could get in trouble if you do.
- Umm...random fact: The lunch hour in HK is 1-2, so Jaejoong eating at 3 is super late D:
- The "uncle" that Jaejoong was referring to is NOT his actual uncle.  In Chinese culture, you refer to elders that you are close with, or even when you meet, by auntie/uncle or something similar to that.  Thus, since he was close friends with Ah Sum, he would refer to her dad as "uncle."
- Loan sharks, called "dai ee long" in Cantonese, are another typical gangster-y thing that they do.  If you borrow money from them, the interest is so crazy high that if you don't pay it off immediately, it pretty much becomes impossible.  They'll throw paint over your house/business to warn you at first, then threaten with throwing acid or oil, and finally some people can't take it, and thus commit suicide.
- The light bus is kinda like a minivan/van, and it holds only 16 passengers.  Here's a pic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Toyota_Coaster_LPG.jpg
- "Tong sui," or "Sweet soup," sounds weird (I know), but it's a Chinese dessert.  There are a lot of kinds, like red bean, sesame, and mung bean, and it's a popular dessert that can be easily bought :)  Lots of people like it, which is why Jaejoong offers ^^
- Yes.  Ninja!blohyuk in this chapter.  XD  It's...my secret guilty pleasure (not so secret anymore lol)
- Lame ending, I know.  I was going to add in another part, but it didn't quite fit with the chapter, so I'm saving it for the next one :D

- And hopefully...someone can help me a bit with formatting!!  I don't know how to center anything within an lj-cut without making the entire entry centered D:  Thank you!!

I really wanna try the tong sui now, it sounds delicious.
And SEVEN years?! Damn, what is up with that? America does the same thing. That's a long time.

Love the ninja!BloHyuk.

And I see now WHY Jae hates Yesung, for Uncle's death... at least he's taking care of Ah Sum. So I'm guessing Yesung was the one Uncle borrowed from?

I can't wait for Chapter 3! Exciting! :D

hopefully...ninja!blohyuk can turn to real!blohyuk soon :D

mmm...i don't want to give anything away. but...it's better to think of it as sj (haha yea, super junior :O) lending money to uncle :)

Oh, this is getting more and more interesting with each chapter I read ^-^

Funny thing is, I'm planning to reopen my mafia verse RP community at the moment XDDD
What a coincidence that I run across this~

I can't wait for the next chaper~
Action is always a good read :D
hkmcdull168hkmcdull168 on June 30th, 2009 09:39 pm (UTC)
hehe yay!! thank you for reading ^^

LOLLL perfect timing :D but...(assuming that rp stands for role-playing), i've never participated in any of those before. do you mind giving me some more info? thanks~

Basically you claim (in the case of my RP community) a male Korean entertainment artist and you play as if you are them.

In my community, it's a mafia so for instance, say I play Yesung and someone else plays Seungri. Now if we RP, we open up a thread and we basically reply back and forth to each other in our character's POV (in third person).

Uhm, if you're still confused, you're welcome to check out black_seoul, my old mafia RP community. It's closed but several posts are public so you can read those ^-^""

Haha, you can say it's like that ^-^

A lot of RPing isn't planned, but that's what makes it fun ^-^

Heh, I'm glad you're interested though, I'll be sure to update you once it's open ^-^
